A panel discussion and networking evening

Organised by Autodesk India

When: 20 June 2017 | 6:30 PM - 10:30 PM

Where: Cowrks, Bangalore

About the event:

With a strong focus on sustainability, the quest for innovation in India is already starting to transform the competitive landscape and pressurizing companies to change the way they think about products, technologies, processes, and business models. Businesses today have realized that they cannot operate in isolation and are exploring different avenues to nestle environment management and sustainability at a grass-root level to propel growth. Thus, it is imperative to initiate a conversation on the importance and integration of design with sustainability for a positive social and environmental impact.

Panel Discussion: In order to nurture this growing opportunity for India, Autodesk India, is organizing a panel discussion with a thematic focus on “Design First: Rooting Sustainability in Design”.

Networking and Dinner: This discussion will be followed by a networking dinner with entrepreneurs, innovators, startup leaders, industry leaders, foundations, academicians, civil society, and industry associations.

Agenda and Setting the Theme for the Panel Discussion:

Companies all over the world are increasingly relying on innovations in products and processes to improve productivity and to keep up with competitive pressure to sustain business growth. While balancing the two elements – sustenance and growth, results are perceived to be mostly limited to the former, rather than achieving a balance between the two. The most common dilemma that businesses face today is while deciding if the focus should remain on increasing the market share vs. profit margins. In this entire process, businesses seldom find time to assess and analyze critical factors that are responsible for a sustainable business growth. For instance, how are we conducting our businesses? How strong is our manufacturing process, or how strong is our resource base – natural and human? These questions call for a pause – to re-look into our approach from “merely conducting a business” to conducting a business which is “sustainable”.

Furthermore, growing global concerns about environmental problems such as climate change, pollution and natural resource loss have pushed industries to move away from the conventional “fragmented and isolated” development. Fostering sustainability approaches across industries, organizations today are retracing their steps back to their “blueprints” to innovate their products and re-design businesses with lesser carbon footprint. In view of this, How can “Design thinking” and “Design methodologies” lead the way to address the common global concerns – resource conservation, sustainable business and lifestyles? Can the integration of design with sustainability contribute towards the development of products that are more affordable and easily accessible?

India stands on the threshold of a major transformation today. At a time when initiatives like ‘Make in India’ and ‘Startup India’ are seeking to promote manufacturing and entrepreneurship in India, it is extremely crucial to consider how sustainability can be imbibed at the incipient stage of designing a product or service. In this regard, what role can India play in leading the way towards a sustainable and resilient world?
