The Aspen Institute

The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also maintains offices in New York City and has an international network of partners.

The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE)

The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) is a program within the Aspen Institute. ANDE is a global membership network of organizations that propel entrepreneurship in emerging markets. ANDE members provide critical financial, educational, and business support services to small and growing businesses (SGBs) based on the conviction that SGBs will create jobs, stimulate long-term economic growth, and produce environmental and social benefits. Ultimately, we believe that SGBs can help lift countries out of poverty.

Launched with 34 members in 2009, ANDE now comprises over 250 members who collectively operate in more than 150 countries. Members of ANDE include both for and nonprofit investment funds, capacity development providers, research and academic institutions, development finance institutions, foundations and corporations from around the world. Based in Washington, D.C. with several offices in emerging markets, the ANDE team works hard to support members globally, and locally, while building strong ecosystems for entrepreneurial growth. ANDE develops unique initiatives to address systemic challenges and seize opportunities that can only be approached through collective action.

Basic Function

This role provides direct support to the Director of Strategic Development in the ongoing management of project scoping, proposal development and grant report writing for the ANDE team. ANDE is experiencing a rapidly accelerating level of interest from donors and partners and we need to hire staff to help keep the pace.

The Development Associate is expected to hit the ground running and deliver on key deliverables related to program development in partnership with current and prospective donors. The Associate will also ensure that all relevant processes are in place so nothing falls through the cracks as ideas turn into projects. We have a lot of exciting opportunities coming down the pike and this role will be critical in ensuring ANDE has the fuel to successfully reach cruising altitude at 30,000 feet.

The Development Associate will be a core member of the fundraising and communications team and help execute on the day-to-day operations of the fundraising side of the house. The role requires a mix of superb writing and communications skills (internally and externally facing).

Your day might start on a call with a prospective donor in Europe to better understand how ANDE might adapt a pan-African proposal to meet their needs while ensuring we can deliver on ambitious milestones. It’s likely you’d follow that with a meeting to pull together a budget that you need for a concept note focused on new research planned in three countries in Latin America. Your afternoon would be busy inputting data in Salesforce to update the global team on where proposals stand, and which conversations with donors have taken place. You may end the day with a last-minute call to a donor in Asia to communicate unexpected changes related to a contract deliverable. The very next day may be spent in its entirety writing an interim report for one of ANDE’s current funders.

Each day will be different, and this role will provide a wide variety of skills development opportunities and exposure to topic areas throughout the small and growing business space in developing countries. This role will be based in the Washington, DC office and will provide an opportunity to perfect time management, prioritization, and writing skills, as there will be several responsibilities to master.
