Matchmaking between businesses and investors
by GIZ and Transformational Business Network

While there is an increase in support for investors and businesses to find one another, little is known on how to efficiently and effectively conduct this activity. This guide directly addresses this knowledge gap and serves as a two-part handbook: First, as an introduction on the value effective ‘Matchmaking’ offers, suggesting a typology and ways in which TA providers can effectively engage in matchmaking. And secondly, as a practical guidebook, offering a theory of change and a practical step-by-step framework on how to structure matchmaking as part of programmatic activities. Overall, this guide encourages TA providers to broaden the application of matchmaking and to adopt a shift in perspective from conventional matchmaking activities.

Blended Finance in the Least Developed Countries
by UN Capital Development Fund and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development

This report, the second in a collaboration between the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), outlines the latest trends in blended finance approaches in LDCs. It lays down a challenge to the actors within the financing for development architecture, calling for blended finance to be much more responsive to LDCs, to the 'last mile', and to smaller transactions in the missing middle.

NGO and company partnerships for inclusive business

NGO and Company Partnerships for Inclusive Business
by Endeva

Inclusive business partnerships (IB partnerships) between NGOs and companies have a very specific form: they start from a concrete opportunity to improve the lives of low-income and marginalized people, and then address this opportunity with a financially viable business model that helps ensure sustainable impact.

Many NGOs and companies are interested in engaging in such partnerships, but often struggle with the “how". This guide aims to create a better understanding for what IB partnerships actually are, provide inspiration in the form of real partnership examples, and offer a way forward by documenting the lessons learned by practitioners in the field.

State of the Small & Growing Business Sector 2018

State of the Small & Growing Business Sector 2018
by the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs

Since 2009, ANDE has been tracking the growth and impact of the small and growing business sector in emerging market economies for our annual State of the Sector report. This report examines global trends in support for small and growing businesses through capacity development services, direct private investment, and donor funding, as well as specific trends in the regions covered by each of our eight chapters: the Andes, Brazil, Central America and Mexico, East Africa, East and Southeast Asia, India, South Africa, and West Africa.

Here are some report insights. Check out the report for much more.

Capacity Development Services

  • GALI data finds that, in the aggregate, accelerators in emerging markets are a good investment.
  • ANDE members providing classroom training almost always bundle this with other types of capacity development services and are highly unlikely to provide this training alone.

SGB Investing

  • In 2018, at least 56 new SGB-inclusive investment vehicles launched, with a median target AUM of US $50 million (the highest median target tracked by ANDE to date).
  • A large majority of ANDE members are actively engaging in gender inclusive activities; however, only 10% actively use a restrictive screen to avoid exposure to SGBs with poor gender diversity records.

Donor Funding

  • This year, ANDE dug deeper into donor funding supporting SGBs in emerging markets and found that multilaterals, bilaterals, and DFIs disbursed $7.4 billion to support SMEs in 2017.
  • Using the OECD’s Creditor Reporting System, ANDE found that gender-related SME donor funding is only a small percentage of all SME-related disbursements.

Regional Insights

In 2018 ANDE added a new chapter in the Andean region of Latin America based out of Bogota, Colombia. Find capacity development, investing, and donor funding insights on this new chapter, as well as ANDE’s 7 other regional chapters, in the regional insights section of the report.

Impact Investing with a Gender Lens in Latin America
by Value for Women

This report - a first of its kind focused on Latin America - summarizes information gathered from 48 Impact Investors and entrepreneurial ecosystem stakeholders in Latin America, primarily members of the ANDE network as well as 254 firms that comprise their portfolios. It includes information from surveys and key informant interviews with 24 Impact Investors and entrepreneurial ecosystem actors. The focus on the impact investing sector is important because gender equality should be front and center for Impact Investors seeking to achieve financial and social returns on their investments. This report highlights that while it is clear that gender equality is good for business and good for development, Impact Investors in Latin America are still only in the early stages of embedding this focus in their investment process and activities.

Nutritious Food Foresight
by Gurnimrat Sidhu, Chase Keenan and Angela R. Hansen

Global Knowledge Initiative is building momentum around this foresight study conducted on food system innovations having the potential to advance near-term nutrition outcomes. These innovations improve access to nutritious foods by introducing local market efficiencies within key resource constraints experienced in emerging markets. In addition to this nutrition lens, GKI is beginning to think about food system innovation as it affects all SDGs through connections to the biosphere, economy, and society alike.
