Investing for Impact: A Strategy of Choice for African Policymakers

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, August 12, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

Over the last decade, the main driver of economic progress across the African continent has arguably not been Official Development Assistance flows but growth, underpinned by private sector activity. This trend is set to continue, with private capital forecast to be the most important source of long-term finance. At the same time, an increase in the levels of social inequality and environmental degradation in many African countries has underscored the importance of a more inclusive model of progress.

According to the report, there has been a noted increase in entrepreneurial activity in Pakistan, which is both exciting and encouraging. GSBI: Social Enterprise Stage Assessment

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, August 12, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

The GSBI Social Enterprise Stage Assessment Tool is designed to guide the development of a social enterprise from conception to full-scale implementation. It has four intended uses: 1. Designing methodology and content for social enterprise accelerator programs 2. Mentoring of social enterprises 3. Benchmarking social enterprises to track their progress over time 4. Selecting social enterprises for awards and accelerator programs.

The stage distinction is useful because it acknowledges that enterprises at each stage will have common characteristics and have different needs, including different capital requirements, than enterprises at other stages. This GSBI Social Enterprise Stage Assessment Tool builds on these definitions by providing a next level of detail that describes the characteristics of enterprises at each stage. This characterization allows social entrepreneurs and those working with them to identify and address gaps in the enterprise’s development as they create a business plan and seek investment to reach the next stage of growth.

China Crowd-funding Report

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, August 11, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

China’s open door policy has transformed the country’s economy, but at a social and environmental cost. Chinese Social and Environmental (SE) Small and Growing Businesses (SGBs) can help China face these challenges through economic development, poverty alleviation, and environmental benefits. Yet Chinese SE SGBs are limited by their lack of finance. Crowdfunding, soliciting small amounts of funding from many people primarily via the internet, provides an alternative to traditional forms of finance. Moreover, it can act as a form of impact investing when targeted towards Chinese SE SGBs, intentionally producing social and environmental (SE) benefits while also increasing the awareness and credibility of the nascent impact investing industry.

Beyond the Pioneer: Getting Inclusive Industries to Scale

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, August 11, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

This is Monitor Deloitte's report entitled Beyond the Pioneer: Getting Inclusive Industries to Scale, based on extensive research carried out by its Monitor Inclusive Markets unit based in Mumbai, India.

There has been increasing interest around the world in the role that inclusive businesses, which engage and benefit the global poor, can play in the fight against the problems of poverty. However, disappointingly few of these have achieved the scale required to make a significant difference to the global poor. An analysis of over 400 such firms in Africa showed that a mere 13% of them had begun to scale. This new report explains why this is the case, and provides recommendations for how these problems can be overcome
