Opportunities in Technology for the Base of the Pyramid in Brazil

This report is a summary of the main discussions presented during the two editions of “Opportunities in Technology for the Base of the Pyramid” event- the first of which was held in Receife on November 12, 2013, the second of which was held in Sao Paulo on May 20, 2014. The event was hosted by the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), Ebay Foundation,  Instituto de Cidadania Empresarial (ICE,) with support from ARTEMISIA, Cria Global, and Porto Digital.

Venture Finance in Africa: the progress of early-stage high-potential growth companies

The VC4Africa 2015 report shows an increasing number of African businesses successfully growing their operations over time. They generate an increasing amount of revenue and add new jobs to the African market place. VC4Africa aims to be the world’s leading social network for entrepreneurs and investors in Africa. The VC4Africa community has over 17,000 members in 159 countries, including 600 investors. 2000 entrepreneurs in Africa present their companies on the platform: early stage ventures that require investments less than USD 1 million. Each venture is scalable, makes smart use of technology, or is disruptive in their application of a business model.

From our perspective at ANDE, we have seen impact investing become an increasingly important tool used to support small and growing businesses in the developing world that are capable of creating jobs, stimulating long-term economic growth, and generating social impact. However, impact investing  is still very much an emerging tool. If it is to scale and become a viable solution to social issues in the United States, There are several key lessons from the international context that the industry should consider.

Metrics to Align Mission with Financial Performance: Tips from Practitioners

Social enterprises and impact investors, along with non-profits and foundations, have invested significant effort in designing metrics to monitor and evaluate impact. Yet these impact metrics do not create as much value as they could. Too often, impact metrics, and the people who manage them, are siloed in their own departments, databases, and discourses, one step removed from strategic and financial decision-making in their organizations.

SPARK's "Opportunities and Challenges to SME Development in Conflict Affected States"

The SPARK tracer survey on ‘Opportunities and Challenges to SME Development in Conflict Affected States’ was conducted in the summer of 2013 among 900 entrepreneurs in 9 countries. The survey was conducted in order to learn more about the effectiveness of SPARK’s small and medium enterprise interventions.

Two main findings of the survey show that existing businesses are better at creating jobs than start-ups and that young people create fewer jobs on average than other businesses. The survey also identifies 5 important business barriers experienced by the participating entrepreneurs.

London Member Meeting Recap- Presentation Slides

On April 8, 2014, ANDE members and friends gathered in London at the Shell Foundation for our annual Member Meetings and Anniversary Celebration.  The daytime workshop included updates from several ANDE members on current initiatives, as well as breakout sessions on women's entrepreneurship, talent development, capital aggregation, and funders' use of challenges.
