Spotlight: Conservação da Biodiversidade

Spotlight sobre Conservação da Biodiversidade é o primeiro da série de relatórios setoriais lançados pela ANDE.

Relatório, produzido pela ANDE em parceria com a Fundação Grupo Boticário, apresenta um panorama ambiental, social e econômico do setor e fornece dados sobre o impacto do investimento na conservação da biodiversidade a partir do relatório "Panorama do Setor de Investimento do Impacto na América Latina". A fim de ilustrar o potencial de negócios e investimentos no setor de conservação da biodiversidade, apresenta um estudo de caso, e finaliza com uma série de oportunidades e recomendações para melhor fomentar o investimento neste setor.

Relatório mostra que foram feitos 8 investimentos de impacto na conservação da biodiversidade na América Latina em 2016-2017, no valor de US $ 5 milhões, com 6 deles ocorrendo no Brasil. Mais da metade dos respondentes da pesquisa afirmaram que alinham seus investimentos com ODS que estão direta ou indiretamente ligadas à conservação da biodiversidade. Além disso, o setor ficou em quarto lugar no número total de negócios em 2016-2017, atrás de Tecnologia da Informação e Comunicação (TIC), educação e saúde, e também teve uma saída reportada no período.

Biodiversity Conservation Spotlight

The Biodiversity Conservation Spotlight is the first in the series of sector reports launched by ANDE.

The report, produced by ANDE in partnership with Boticário Group Foundation, presents an environmental, social and economic panorama of the sector, then provides data on investment impact in biodiversity conservation from the report "Overview of the Investment Sector of Impact in Latin America". In order to illustrate the potential for business and investments in the biodiversity conservation sector, it presents a case study, before ending with a series of opportunities and recommendations to better foster investment in this sector.

The report shows that 8 impact investments were made in biodiversity conservation in Latin America in 2016-2017, to the amount of US $ 5 million, with 6 of these taking place in Brazil. More than half of the survey respondents stated that they align their investments with SGDs that are directly or indirectly linked to biodiversity conservation. In addition, the sector ranked fourth in total number of deals in 2016-2017, behind Information and Communication Technology (ICT), education and health, and also had one exit reported in the period.

O Panorama do setor de Investimento de Impacto no Brasil é um desdobramento do estudo lançado pelas duas organizações sobre investimento de impacto na América Latina, lançado pela Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) e da Associação para o Capital Privado na América Latina (LAVCA), em outubro de 2018. 

Este relatório nacional é baseado em uma subamostra dos 67 entrevistados da pesquisa da América Latina, dos quais 29 estão ativos no Brasil e 22 investiram no país durante o período 2016-2017. A maioria deles se identifica como investidores de impacto ou gestores de fundos de private equity ou venture capital. O relatório fornece dados sobre o perfil dos investidores ativos, atividade de investimento de 2016-2017 e expectativas de investimento no Brasil em 2018-2019.

Os resultados do estudo brasileiro ressaltam que o investimento de impacto é uma indústria em crescimento no país e tem se mantido resiliente apesar do cenário político e econômico. O Brasil foi um dos países que apresentou os maiores números em termos de atividade de investimento de impacto na região. O relatório apresenta dados de investimento de impacto com base em características como setor, tamanho e estágio de negócios, e também compara a atividade de investimento com a de 2014-2015, antes de concluir com recomendações para o desenvolvimento da indústria no futuro.

The Impact Investment Landscape in Brazil is a follow-up to the study launched by the two organizations on impact investing in Latin America, launched by the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) and the Association for Private Capital Investment in Latin America (LAVCA) in October 2018.

This national report is based on a sub-sample of the 67 survey respondents from the Latin America study, of which 29 are active in Brazil and 22 invested in the country during the period 2016-2017. Most of them identify themselves as impact investors or managers of private equity or venture capital funds. The report provides data on the profile of the active investors, investment activity for 2016-2017 and expectations for investment in Brazil in 2018-2019.

The results of the Brazilian study emphasize that impact investment is a growing industry in the country and has remained resilient despite the political and economic scenario. Brazil was one of the countries that presented the highest numbers in terms of impact investment activity in the region. The report presents impact investing data based on characteristics such as sector, size and business stage, and also compares investment activity with that from 2014-2015, before concluding with recommendations for developing the industry moving forward.

The Atlas of Innovation for Economic Stability

The Atlas of Innovation for Economic Stability presents 63 examples of policy, program and technology innovations that promote economic stability for individuals, communities, firms and countries, with an emphasis on the welfare of poor and vulnerable people worldwide. The report found strong and diverse innovation in India, Kenya and the United States. Indonesia stands out for the use of data and innovation tools in government, and Brazil ranks high for public safety-related domains. The majority of innovations are privately provided and enabled by mobile technology and data, although FHI 360 identified several pockets of significant government and donor participation in catalyzing or scaling innovation. This publication was funded by The Rockefeller Foundation.

The Impact Investing Landscape in Latin America

The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), in partnership with the Latin American Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (LAVCA), and LGT Impact Ventures has released a report on the growing landscape of impact investing in Latin America. Impact investing is a relatively nascent industry, and this report aims to fill the data gap in key Latin American markets.

The report covers trends in regional impact investing with a focus on impact measurement, talent, and gender. It explores fundraising, deals, and exits, and takes a deep dive into impact investing in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico.

Some Key Points: 

  • Seventy-eight firms reported that they have made impact investments in Latin America. the first impact investment was made in 1997
  • Twenty-eight impact investors headquartered in Latin America manage US $1.2 billion in assets under management (AUM)
  • The type of organizations making impact investments are diverse in size, organizational structure, the type of capital they have been able to raise, and their relative expectations for financial and impact return on investment
  • Respondents reported US$1.3 billion invested in 522 impact investing deals in 2014 and 2015
  • Respondents were optimistic about fundraising for 2016
  • Across Latin America, common challenges to entrepreneurial development include the lack of interested entrepreneurs with growth ambitions, a lack of early stage funding, and weak networks

ANDE Brazil Impact Investing Conference

Housing at the Base of the Pyramid in Brazil

This report is based on the themes and messages discussed during the Business Opportunities in Housing for the Base of the Pyramid event held in São Paulo, Brazil on 2 September 2013. The event brought together between key actors developing housing solutions for low-income communities in Brazil. More than 70 members from the United Nations Development Programme in Brazil, city government, civil society, real estate developers, private-sector companies and investors attended this invite-only event, a collaborative effort between Business Call to Action (BCtA) and Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) Brazil Chapter which enabled participating stakeholders to discuss challenges and solutions.
