Relations between Savings Groups (SGs) and Financial Service Providers (FSPs) have received both a great deal of attention and considerable funding. In recent years, governments, donors, civil society organizations, and businesses have recognized the critical role that access to financial services can play in the fight against poverty. Despite the high-level of attention financial inclusion has commanded, the barriers to progress are numerous. Most impoverished households have neither the assets nor the skills necessary to interact with formal institutions. This report focuses on addressing these challenges and presenting opportunities for FSPs in working with SGs.

GSBI Methodology for Social Entrepreneurship

The Global Social Benefit Institute (GSBI®), a pioneer in social enterprise capacity development, hascontinuously improved its methodology since its founding in 2003. The lessons GSBI has learned from working with 365 social enterprises are broadly applicable to capacity development efforts across sectors and geographies. This paper introduces GSBI and explains the GSBI methodology, with the goal of helping the global social enterprise movement create more exits from poverty. 

GSBI has become a leading, comprehensive program for social enterprise capacity development worldwide. Its suite of stage-specific programs for early and mid-stage social enterprises, along with its network of partners, collectively serve hundreds of impact organizations annually.

GSBI has developed a methodology that revolves around three dynamic, interactive aspects: social enterprise selection, stage-specific programs, and executive-level mentoring. GSBI invites applications from social enterprises that are “impact first,” meaning that their primary mission is to deliver goods and services to those in need.

GSBI evaluates candidates in two phases. GSBI staff filter for general program fit, then score candidates according to criteria that predict each enterprise’s potential for short-term success in GSBI as well as long-term growth. Priority is given to social enterprises with earned income business models, because this approach lends itself to scaling. To match a social enterprise with the curriculum most appropriate to help it grow, GSBI developed a Social Enterprise Stage Assessment Tool.

Winning Together - a guide to successful corporate startup collaboration

To help corporations reap the benefits of collaborating with startups, Nesta has produced a guide along with Founders Intelligence and the Startup Europe Partnership. Their results show that companies of multiple sizes and representing multiple sectors can benefit from working with young, innovative firms. 

The guide seeks to:

  • help executives and innovation managers understand what value working with startups can bring to their organization
  • provide them with a three-step approach and framework to evaluate and select suitable programs to engage with startups
  • empower those who want to champion startup engagement inside their company with case studies and stories that clearly illustrate the transformative benefits of collaborations.

Improved Stoves in India: A Study of Sustainable Business Models

A recent study of 12 organizations selling improved cookstoves in India identified the challenges of selling these products to the poor. The authors found the two companies with the most success focused on developing a sophisticated sales channel, had considerable person-years of management experience in marketing and operations, and had sufficient seed financing. However, none of the companies selling products directly to households (compared to those targeting commercial customers) had demonstrated financial sustainability. They find that cookstove companies in India face tradeoffs between commercial success and the ability to provide health benefits to poor customers. Improved cookstoves are often being sold to higher income customers in rural areas, rather than the poorest of the poor, which is consistent with previous research.

Emerging Markets, Emerging Models: Market Based Solutions to the Challenges of Global Poverty - Monitor Inclusive Markets

Market-based solutions have recently attracted strong interest in the campaign against global poverty, in part due to the remarkable success of micro-finance. They are relatively new, with an uneven performance record, and there is much yet to learn about what causes them to succeed or fail. The most successful pass two tests: they are self-funding, and they operate at suffi cient scale to make a
difference to masses of poor people. They also have one salient feature in common: a business model tailored to the special circumstances of markets at the base of the income pyramid.

The report is based on Monitor’s extensive research into hundreds of market-based solutions around the world, with a particular focus on India, which is an advanced laboratory of approaches and an especially fertile source of lessons about performance. The research is based on dozens of site visits and hundreds of interviews as well as extensive work in the public record. The report provides strong evidence that engaging the poor as customers and suppliers presents an exciting — and signifi cant — opportunity to establish new
paradigms to bring genuine social change in economically sustainable ways.
