Global Entrepreneurship Monitor - 2010 Women's Report - Kelley, Brush, Greene & Litovsky

Posted By Saurabh Lall, ANDE, Thursday, December 15, 2011
The purpose of the GEM Women’s report is to examine women entrepreneurs around the world. The report seeks to understand differences in the frequency and nature of women’s entrepreneurship, and makes comparisons with men across various societies. Through interviews with more than 90,000 women, GEM discovered over 14,000 women entrepreneurs, studying their motivations for
starting ventures, as well as their ambitions for growth, innovation and expansion into international markets.

The researchers also analyzed societal attitudes about entrepreneurship, paying particular attention to differences in perceptions  among men and women. Furthermore, they explored the impact of the recession on views about starting and growing businesses among women and men entrepreneurs.

Global Entrepreneurship Monitor 2010 - Babson College & Universidad del Desarrollo

Posted By Saurabh Lall, Aspen Institute - ANDE, Thursday, November 17, 2011
2011

With this report, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) has completed 12 annual surveys of the entrepreneurial attitudes, activities and aspirations of individuals around the world. Starting with just 10 developed countries in 1999, GEM has grown
to include over 80 economies during the course of these 12 years. In 2010, over 175,000 people were surveyed in 59 economies. These 59 economies represent not only the largest sample yet, but also the most geographically and economically diverse group
surveyed. Together, this group covers over 52% of the world’s population and 84% of the world’s GDP.

The 2010 survey shows that, in the economies analyzed, some 110 million people between 18 and 64 years old were actively engaged in starting a business. Another 140 million were running new businesses they started less than 3½ years earlier. Taken together, some 250 million were involved in what GEM defines as early stage entrepreneurial activity. Out of these individuals, an estimated 63 million people expected to hire at least five employees over the next five years, and 27 million of these individuals anticipated hiring twenty or more employees in five years. This illustrates the contribution of entrepreneurship to job growth across the globe.

Data Driven: A Performance Analysis for the Impact Investing Industry - Global Impact Investing Network

Posted By Saurabh Lall, Friday, September 23, 2011
Published September 2011

IRIS is a universal language for social, environmental, and financial performance reporting. It was developed as a tool for the impact investing industry to improve transparency, increase the credibility of social and environmental performance data, and facilitate investment comparability and performance benchmarking.

This first report presents early findings from 2,394 organizations - including 1,931 microfinance institutions and 463 mission-driven organizations - that work with leading impact investment intermediaries. In addition to presenting early aggregated performance data, this report's objective is to drive widespread adoption of IRIS and to encourage impact investors, funds, and mission-driven organizations to strengthen future market intelligence by voluntarily contributing data for analysis through IRIS data collection partners.
