Posted By Alexander Pan, Aspen Institute, Tuesday, November 19, 2013

This special report from the Center for International Private Enterprise, Creating the Environment for Entrepreneurial Success, highlights the crucial environmental dimension of entrepreneurship ecosystems. Farmer Bankability and Sustainable Finance: Farm-Level Metrics that Matter

Posted By Alexander Pan, Aspen Institute, Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Researchers commissioned by the Rainforest Alliance compared financial recordkeeping variables between Rainforest Alliance Certified farms and noncertified farms; they also surveyed social lenders and local, in-country financial institutions. The study established a common minimum set of metrics for producers to record/report in order to apply for credit; showed that certified producers are better at tracking financial metrics; demonstrated that certified producers have better access to credit; and confirmed that although lenders prefer to lend to small and medium-sized enterprises, they also value farm-level metrics. Posted By Saurabh Lall, ANDE, Friday, December 16, 2011
December 2011

The Rainforest Alliance and the Citi Foundation Sustainable Value Chain Finance Workshop was held in April 2011 in New York City. It brought together actors in agriculture value chains - representing buyers, exporters, retailers, producers, insurers, the financial sector, civil society and development partners. During the Workshop the participants addressed the following questions:

  • What is being done already in sustainable value chain finance that we can learn from?
  • Which value chain finance instruments might lend themselves to incentivizing sustainability?
  • How do we mainstream sustainable value chain finance?
  • How do we pilot test injecting sustainability into new instruments in our value chains?
