Matchmaking between businesses and investors
by GIZ and Transformational Business Network

While there is an increase in support for investors and businesses to find one another, little is known on how to efficiently and effectively conduct this activity. This guide directly addresses this knowledge gap and serves as a two-part handbook: First, as an introduction on the value effective ‘Matchmaking’ offers, suggesting a typology and ways in which TA providers can effectively engage in matchmaking. And secondly, as a practical guidebook, offering a theory of change and a practical step-by-step framework on how to structure matchmaking as part of programmatic activities. Overall, this guide encourages TA providers to broaden the application of matchmaking and to adopt a shift in perspective from conventional matchmaking activities.

Impact Investments by Foundations in Singapore and Hong Kong

Impact Investments by Foundations in Singapore and Hong Kong
Pauline Tan, Swee-Sum Lam
The Asia Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy (ACSEP) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School and Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF)

The study reviews the current state of impact investments in Singapore and Hong Kong, particularly those that have engaged with foundations. It further looks at the trends and challenges of the impact investment sector before presenting a list of recommendations.

Impact investment assets globally represent a mere 0.2 percent of global wealth as reported by the Global Impact Investing Network. By increasing this share to just two percent, the potential of impact investments can reach over US$2 trillion (UNDP, 2016). Impact investments can play a significant role in sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region, potentially providing socio- economic progress for the billions of people living in the region. Foundations in the region can potentially play a significant role given the billions of assets they can deploy.

The results of this study also demonstrate that though the surveyed impact investors’ primary motivation is to invest with measurable impact, their financial motivation is generally the same as traditional investors: to preserve capital and generate a financial return for the asset owner.

Microfinance Funds – 10 years of research and practice:
A Review and Analysis of CGAP & Symbiotics' Microfinance Investment Vehicles Surveys

by CCAP and Symbiotics

This 10-year review of the landscape of microfinance offshore investments is based on data collected through annual CGAP/Symbiotics surveys of Microfinance Investment Vehicles (MIVs) conducted between 2007 and 2016. The current paper largely focuses on MIVs, as defined in the disclosure guidelines – namely independent investment vehicles with more than 50% of non-cash assets invested in microfinance and open to multiple investors. However, and to a lesser extent, this paper also compiles data on some microfinance investment intermediaries (MIIs), such as funds open to single investors.
