Impact investing is a relatively nascent industry, and this report aims to fill the data gap in key Latin American markets.

Some Key Points:

  • Twenty-eight impact investors headquartered in Latin America manage US $1.2 billion in assets under management (AUM)
  • The type of organizations making impact investments are diverse in size, organizational structure, the type of capital they have been able to raise, and their relative expectations for financial and impact return on investment
  • Respondents reported US$1.3 billion invested in 522 impact investing deals in 2014 and 2015
  • Respondents were optimistic about fundraising for 2016
  • Across Latin America, common challenges to entrepreneurial development include the lack of interested entrepreneurs with growth ambitions, a lack of early stage funding, and weak networks

Mapping the Impact Investing Sector in Brazil

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

During the past 10 years of impact investing in Brazil, we have observed a significant development in the impact investing space. Five years ago, only a few players identified themselves as impact investors, very few organizations in the social sector were investor-ready, and there were almost no co-investment opportunities. A steep increase in the number of investors and amount of capital, greater coordination among players, and a more professional workforce active in the industry today have facilitated the development of impact investing. This market study of the impact investing sector in Brazil reveals significant market growth. Nineteen of Brazil’s largest impact investors, including fund managers, banks, foundations, family offices and others surveyed expect to commit 40% to 50% more capital to impact investments in 2014 compared to 2013.

Posted By Administration, Saturday, August 22, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 16, 2015

SMEs are positioning themselves as a strategic branch of banking operations in the region, while banks are increasingly pushing for more active policies when it comes to the financing of SMEs. This is one of the highlighted conclusions from a 2011 joint survey conducted by the Inter-American Development Bank Group's entities dealing with the private sector: the Multilateral Investment Fund (FOMIN), the beyondBanking program of the department of Corporate and Structured Financing (SCF), and the Inter-American Investment Corporation, along with the Latin American Banking Federation (FELABAN). This report introduces the general results obtained during the fourth survey encompassing the views and opinions of directors, managers and deputies of the SME division of 109 banks scattered across 22 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. It also includes an itemized analysis of the answers divided by the banks size and location, as well as their interrelations with other trends in that sector.
