The Index of Global Philanthropy and Remittances 2012

Posted By Administration, Friday, August 21, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 16, 2015

This year’s Index of Global Philanthropy and Remit- tances chronicles the continued growth of private financial flows to the developing world and how new forms of giving are poised to change the face of international philanthropy and global foreign aid as we know it today. Among the highlights of the Center for Global Prosperity’s 7th annual Index are:

-Global philanthropy, remittances, and private capital investment totaled $575 billion in 2010 (latest available data), accounting for 82% of the developed world’s eco- nomic dealings with developing countries. While gov- ernment aid grew to one of its highest levels at $128 billion, it accounted for only 18% of total financial flows and continues to be a minority shareholder in the inter- national development landscape.

-Private capital investment flows from all donors, on the heels of the economic recession, regained their posi- tion of prominence at $329 billion, a substantial increase from $228 billion in 2009.

-Total remittances from all Development Assistance Committee (DAC )donors to the developing world were $190 billion, a 9% increase from $174 billion in 2009, once again showing how this steady and stable financial flow is a lifeline to the poor in tough economic times.

-Total philanthropy, while underestimated because many DAC donor countries are still not properly meas- uring it, was $56 billion in 2010, a gain of $3 billion from the previous year.

Private Capital for Social Outcomes: Identifying More Opportunities for Impact Investment in International Development

Posted By Administration, Saturday, August 15, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

The International Development Working Group is one of four thematic Working Groups of the independent Social Impact Investment Taskforce established in June 2013 under the UK’s presidency of the G8. The International Development Working Group, composed of experts in international development and finance, was created to inform the Taskforce on the role of impact investment in international development, and contribute to the Taskforce’s objectives of reporting on and helping to catalyze the development of a global social impact investment market.

The International Development Working Group brought together development practitioners and investors to explore the ways in which the changing landscape of development is creating new opportunities for effective partnerships to drive improvement in social outcomes. The Working Group assessed how impact investment can help to further drive economic development and improvement on social issues in developing countries. Working Group members agree that there is an opportunity for impact investment, in conjunction with public, private and philanthropic capital, to bring greater effectiveness, innovation, accountability and scale to address some of the world’s toughest challenges. The group presents in this report its key recommendations on some proposed joint initiatives to advance the impact investing market for the benefit of the world’s poor populations.

Impact Investment: The Invisible Heart of Markets

Posted By Administration, Saturday, August 15, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

The world is on the brink of a revolution in how we solve society’s toughest problems. The force driving this revolution is “impact investing”, which harnesses entrepreneurship, innovation and capital to power social progress. This report, Impact Investing: The Invisible Heart of Markets – Harnessing the power of entrepreneurship, innovation and capital for public good, examines what is needed to catalyse the growth of a global market for impact investment. It makes recommendations that can be implemented across Taskforce countries and beyond to deliver better social outcomes and improve millions of lives across the world.

The crash of 2008 highlighted the need for a renewed effort to ensure that finance helps build a healthy society rather than endanger it. This requires a paradigm shift in capital market thinking, from two-dimensions to three. By bringing a third dimension, impact, to the traditional capital market priorities of risk and return, impact investing has the potential to transform our ability to build a better society for all.

The Indian Impact Investing Story

Posted By Administration, Thursday, August 13, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

At Intellecap, we have always been fascinated by the power of entrepreneurship in driving social change. The passion and drive shown by numerous entrepreneurs working with the Base of the Pyramid is one of the most  powerful forces to address the many challenges of access, affordability and livelihoods facing low-income  communities in India. Our own tryst with narrating this entrepreneurial journey began with our first research series ‘Inverting the Pyramid’ from 2007, analyzing the rapid evolution of the microfinance sector in India. We were fortunate to have always been close to all the practitioners in the sector and the series was our effort to provide a robust commentary on the many highs and lows of this sector.
