Financing the Sustainable Development Goals: Impact Investing in Action

Financing the Sustainable Development Goals: Impact Investing in Action
by the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN)

The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) published a new report in September 2018, Financing the Sustainable Development Goals: Impact Investing in Action, that reiterates the need for impact investors to raise and direct new capital to help meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. With an estimated $5-7 trillion needed annually to achieve the goals, it is clear that more capital, deployed by investors whose aims align with these goals, is an absolute requirement. The report, released in advance of the agenda for the UN’s Global Goals Week, Sept. 22-29, showcases the potential for impact investing to catalyze progress towards these goals.

Impact Investments by Foundations in Singapore and Hong Kong

Impact Investments by Foundations in Singapore and Hong Kong
Pauline Tan, Swee-Sum Lam
The Asia Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy (ACSEP) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School and Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF)

The study reviews the current state of impact investments in Singapore and Hong Kong, particularly those that have engaged with foundations. It further looks at the trends and challenges of the impact investment sector before presenting a list of recommendations.

Impact investment assets globally represent a mere 0.2 percent of global wealth as reported by the Global Impact Investing Network. By increasing this share to just two percent, the potential of impact investments can reach over US$2 trillion (UNDP, 2016). Impact investments can play a significant role in sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region, potentially providing socio- economic progress for the billions of people living in the region. Foundations in the region can potentially play a significant role given the billions of assets they can deploy.

Beyond Investment: The power of capacity building support

By the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN)

Impact investors seek to achieve meaningful positive change through their investments, including greatly improving the quality of life of underserved people around the world, and ensuring a sustainable and healthy planet. These investors often work in challenging environments with untested business models. Capacity-building support, also known as technical assistance, is a vital tool used by many investors to complement their investments and expand and deepen their impact.

I am pleased to share our report, Beyond Investment: The Power of Capacity-Building Support, which illuminates current capacity-building practice and invites a discussion about how to elevate future practice. This report documents how capacity-building support can contribute to the impact that investors are able to achieve, and surfaces three key insights about the current state of such support in impact investing:
