Amplify Impact Investing:
The International Value Proposition for Impact Investing

By InsideNGO and the INGO Impact Investing Network

InsideNGO and the International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO) Impact Investing Network announce the publication of Amplify Impact Investing: The INGO Value Proposition for Impact Investing, an in-depth study of the current impact investing landscape among INGOs in the international development sector. The report reveals that the development sector’s impact investing activity is growing, with INGO-managed or -founded impact investing funds encompassing more than $545 million in assets.

While the traditional development funding model has relied upon government grants and contracts, foundations, and philanthropic giving, the impact investing model seeks solutions to economic and social challenges that result in a financial return for the investors. The INGO Impact Investing Network was formed last year by InsideNGO, the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs, Pact, Mercy Corps, and GOAL as a consortium of more than 40 INGOs that are working together to gather and share knowledge about how INGOs are using private investment capital to advance their work in solving pressing global development challenges.

Venture Philanthropists & Impact Investors

by Toniic

As impact investing matures as a movement, more investment models are being deployed, especially in sectors and regions where various forms of capital are needed to support solutions to some of the world’s chronic social and environmental issues. In this report, we share a number of examples of how venture philanthropists and impact investors are working together to fund early-stage impact enterprises around the world.  How are different types of capital and other resources complementing each other to achieve impact? What lessons can be learned from some of the current efforts by foundations and individual investors to collaborate?

Impact Report 2014: State of the Small and Growing Business Sector

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Thursday, March 17, 2016

This report focuses on the state of the global SGB sector, and also dives into regional trends. First, we provide an overview on intermediaries in 2014, including data on capacity development services, direct investments into SGBs, and donor funding. Next, we highlight trends and activities at ANDE’s five most established regional chapters: Brazil, Central America/Mexico, East Africa, India, and South Africa. We also expose current challenges for the sector to address, such as how to recruit and retain talent, improve entrepreneurial acceleration, and increase donor support to fulfill global development goals.

Since ANDE’s founding in 2009, we have seen much progress made by the SGB sector, composed of those organizations that support entrepreneurs in emerging markets. In 2014, more than 200 members were operating in more than 150 countries, and had collectively supported nearly 350,000 entrepreneurs.

Nonfinancial support has increased.
We have identified over 600 accelerator programs operating globally, including at least 200 based in emerging market countries. This model shows promise: preliminary research results show revenue and employee growth for accelerated enterprises was three times faster than growth for nonaccelerated enterprises.

The pace of investing has picked up.
We estimate that in the past five years, investment vehicles that do deals $2 million and below in emerging markets have raised $10 billion to invest in SGBs. The number of private equity deals below $2 million tripled in 2014 compared to 2010. And encouragingly, investors are increasingly willing to make earlier stage deals—lowering their median minimum target deal size in the past five years to $250,000.

But, there is still work to be done.
Despite the growing recognition that SGBs are a powerful mechanism to achieve economic and social change, investments from the international donor community have decreased to one percent of total development assistance.  We believe that if donors increase support directly to small and growing businesses, and more importantly invest in initiatives that strengthen the overall entrepreneurial ecosystem, they can have a catalytic effect on market-based approaches that will solve critical global challenges.

Mapping the Impact Investing Sector in Brazil

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

During the past 10 years of impact investing in Brazil, we have observed a significant development in the impact investing space. Five years ago, only a few players identified themselves as impact investors, very few organizations in the social sector were investor-ready, and there were almost no co-investment opportunities. A steep increase in the number of investors and amount of capital, greater coordination among players, and a more professional workforce active in the industry today have facilitated the development of impact investing. This market study of the impact investing sector in Brazil reveals significant market growth. Nineteen of Brazil’s largest impact investors, including fund managers, banks, foundations, family offices and others surveyed expect to commit 40% to 50% more capital to impact investments in 2014 compared to 2013.

Impact Report 2013: State of the Small and Growing Business Sector

Posted By Administration, Thursday, March 31, 2016
Updated: Monday, June 8, 2015

This report highlights the state of the SGB sector and also ANDE's vision for our future. You may notice differences from previous years' publications. This year, we have designed a report that we hope will be a reference for organizations who already are involved in the sector. Rather than making the case for SGBs, this report focuses on the progress and challenges that we have seen over the past five years. We draw on data provided by ANDE members and others over the past year to understand sector trends. We also leverage ANDE's proprietary research and the work of our member-led working groups and regional chapters to highlight important issues and milestones. The member initiatives that we describe represent just a small fraction of the exciting developments among ANDE members.
