This report highlights the state of the SGB sector and also ANDE's vision for our future. You may notice differences from previous years' publications. This year, we have designed a report that we hope will be a reference for organizations who already are involved in the sector. Rather than making the case for SGBs, this report focuses on the progress and challenges that we have seen over the past five years. We draw on data provided by ANDE members and others over the past year to understand sector trends. We also leverage ANDE's proprietary research and the work of our member-led working groups and regional chapters to highlight important issues and milestones. The member initiatives that we describe represent just a small fraction of the exciting developments among ANDE members.

Building on YBI’s policy recommendations to date1, this report compiles a series of case studies that each illustrate how the finance gap can be closed for young and other underserved entrepreneurs through providing non-financial support, such as training and mentoring. This integrated approach reduces the risk of lending
to youth and other underserved demographics, and the value of the non-financial support substitutes for collateral and other types of guarantee.
Six YBI case studies are featured and three from other sector leaders: International Youth Foundation (IYF), TechnoServe and Silatech.

This report springs from a point of view shared by Monitor and Acumen Fund — that philanthropy is the essential but often overlooked catalyst that unlocks the impact potential of inclusive business and impact investing. The report has been created with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The key themes discussed here are based on the sum of Monitor’s extensive research into more than 700 inclusive businesses in Africa and India, and Acumen Fund’s decade of experience as a pioneering impact investor. They also draw together the experiences and observations of dozens of impact investors, grant funders, academics and other experts who were generous enough to share their thoughts with us.

Impact investments are investments intended to create positive impact alongside financial return. Over the past few years, traditional investors have been increasingly interested by the nascent impact investment market and in 2010, the Global Impact Investing Network (“GIIN”), the Rockefeller Foundation and J.P. Morgan collaborated on a piece of research titled Impact Investments: An Emerging Asset Class, which examined the market landscape, the characteristics of investments, and the size of potential investment opportunities1. Last year’s work included a survey that yielded data on over 1,000 private impact investment transactions. This year, the GIIN and J.P. Morgan have partnered on an expanded survey, capturing data on over 2,200 private transactions totaling over USD 4bn of investment. In complement to this investment survey, we also surveyed investor views on investment philosophy and the overall development of the sector. The 2011 survey returned data from a broader and more geographically diverse pool of respondents. The questions explore returns, risk and impact measurement practices in more depth and also gauge general market perceptions.

This report explores how companies are redefining business strategies to create shared value across five sectors: food, beverages, and agriculture; health care; financial services; extractives and natural resources; and housing and construction. It highlights more than thirty company case studies and provides perspectives on a range of geographies. Guided by key learning questions identified by the Rockefeller Foundation, this paper provides stories and frameworks to inspire and inform the strategies of multinationals and their partners as they seek to create shared value at the base of the pyramid.

Entrepreneurs are key drivers of economic and social progress. Rapidly growing entrepreneurial enterprises are often viewed as important sources of innovation, productivity growth and employment (small and medium-sized enterprises account for a high percentage of all jobs in emerging economies). Many governments are therefore trying to actively promote entrepreneurship through various forms of support. The World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Stanford University, Ernst & Young and Endeavor, surveyed over 1,000 entrepreneurs from around the globe with the goal of better understanding how successful entrepreneurial companies speed access to new markets and become scalable, high-growth businesses. Executive case studies for 43 early-stage companies from 23 different countries were developed to enrich the feedback from the survey.

IFC Jobs Study - Assessing Private sector contributions to job creation and poverty reduction
IFC, January 2013 This
report is the result of an open-source study to assess the direct and
indirect effects of private sector activity on job creation. The report
examines how and under what conditions the private sector can best
contribute to job creation and poverty reduction, drawing on a review of
the literature and evaluations; surveys of more than 45,000 businesses
in over 100 countries; a website, blog, and essay competition to solicit
outside views; macro and micro case studies of IFC clients; and IFC’s
own operational experience and lessons learned.
