From Potential to Action: Bringing Social Impact Bonds to the US

Posted By Susannah Eastham, Aspen Institute, Friday, August 21, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 16, 2015

This report is a rigorous, data-driven analysis of the potential and capacity for SIBs in the United States. It disaggregated the SIB ecosystem into stakeholder groups (constituents, government, nonprofit service provid- ers, investors, intermediaries, evaluation advisers, and independent assessors), identified the obstacles each group might face, and thought through how those obstacles would affect the ecosystem as a whole.  It studied how SIBs might be applied in two program areas (homeless- ness and criminal justice), and did a pro forma analysis of a SIB in the juvenile justice arena to show how the economics of a SIB could play out.

The Index of Global Philanthropy and Remittances 2012

Posted By Administration, Friday, August 21, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 16, 2015

This year’s Index of Global Philanthropy and Remit- tances chronicles the continued growth of private financial flows to the developing world and how new forms of giving are poised to change the face of international philanthropy and global foreign aid as we know it today. Among the highlights of the Center for Global Prosperity’s 7th annual Index are:

-Global philanthropy, remittances, and private capital investment totaled $575 billion in 2010 (latest available data), accounting for 82% of the developed world’s eco- nomic dealings with developing countries. While gov- ernment aid grew to one of its highest levels at $128 billion, it accounted for only 18% of total financial flows and continues to be a minority shareholder in the inter- national development landscape.

-Private capital investment flows from all donors, on the heels of the economic recession, regained their posi- tion of prominence at $329 billion, a substantial increase from $228 billion in 2009.

-Total remittances from all Development Assistance Committee (DAC )donors to the developing world were $190 billion, a 9% increase from $174 billion in 2009, once again showing how this steady and stable financial flow is a lifeline to the poor in tough economic times.

-Total philanthropy, while underestimated because many DAC donor countries are still not properly meas- uring it, was $56 billion in 2010, a gain of $3 billion from the previous year.

A White Paper: Metrics Milestones for Incubators

Posted By Susannah Eastham, Aspen Institute, Friday, August 21, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

In this whitepaper NEN agues that Incubators are not a uniform beast and can and should be categorized. Categorization enables us to identify the unique characteristics, success factors for each incubator model thereby enabling propagation of successful models appropriate under different conditions. Development of incubators can be systematized with milestone driven indicators of progress and predictable outcomes. However, the key challenge is lack of nationally accepted metrics and milestones that are relevant to the different kinds of incubator models. We strongly advocate that in the near term, the framework illustrated in this document be used to help institute a nationally accepted set of metrics and milestones for incubators in India.

Global Employment Trends for Youth 2013: A generation at risk

Posted By Administration, Friday, August 21, 2015
Updated: Tuesday, June 9, 2015

This paper examines how the weakening of the global recovery in 2012 and 2013 has further aggravated the youth jobs crisis and the queues for available jobs have become longer and longer for some unfortunate young jobseekers. So long, in fact, that many youth are giving up on the job search. The prolonged jobs crisis also forces the current generation of youth to be less selective about the type of job they are prepared to accept, a tendency that was already evident before the crisis. Increasing numbers of youth are now turning to available part-time jobs or find themselves stuck in temporary employment. Secure jobs, which were once the norm for previous generations – at least in the advanced economies – have become less easily accessible for today’s youth.

Priming the Pump - The Case for a Sector Based Approach to Impact Investing

Posted By Administration, Friday, August 21, 2015
Updated: Wednesday, June 10, 2015

This discussion paper argues for a shit in focus toward the goal of scaling entire industry sectors, in addition to individual firms. Our experience from the past eight years is that impact investors can massively increase the number of lives they touch by concentrating investments in specific industry sectors in specific geographies, and by investing in a range of organizations to accelerate the development of these industry segments. The need for investment is particularly acute at the earliest stages of innovation, which provide the foundation in which entire new sectors can emerge and scale rapidly by tapping commercial capital markets.
