Micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises in emerging markets: how banks can grasp a $350 billion opportunity

Micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises in emerging markets: how banks can grasp a $350 billion opportunity

This paper argues that the time is right for banks to step up their effortsto serve micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) inemerging markets. There are three reasons for our optimism. First, anestimated 60 per cent of global banking revenue growth over the nextdecade will lie in emerging markets. Second, more and more banks inemerging markets are finding ways to overcome the difficulties of servingthe important MSME segment. Third, innovations in technology, riskassessment and business models are increasingly facilitating their effort.

Learning from Leaders in a Fast-Growing Field: Results from the first Dalberg Survey of Social Enterprise - Dalberg Global Development Advisors

Posted By Saurabh Lall, ANDE, Friday, December 16, 2011
December 2011

Social enterprise, once a poorly understood cousin of charities and non-governmental organizations, has become a mainstream part of the business sector around the world. Its growth is a validation of two central principles: 1) that it is possible to do well by doing good, and 2) that financial sustainability is the key to maximizing the social benefit of an organization.

To help them on their way, this survey has collected both basic information and insights gained through experience from dozens of prominent social entrepreneurs. We placed particular emphasis on the factors underpinning their success and the challenges they currently faced, but we also encouraged them to proffer advice to social entrepreneurs entering the field for the first time. The questions were designed for brief and easy answers, but respondents were welcome to expand upon their answers and provide general commentary as well. A complete facsimile of the survey  is available online at http://dalberg.com/news under "Recent Publications.”

The Rainforest Alliance and the Citi Foundation Sustainable Value Chain Finance Workshop was held in April 2011 in New York City. It brought together actors in agriculture value chains - representing buyers, exporters, retailers, producers, insurers, the financial sector, civil society and development partners. During the Workshop the participants addressed the following questions:

  • What is being done already in sustainable value chain finance that we can learn from?
  • Which value chain finance instruments might lend themselves to incentivizing sustainability?
  • How do we mainstream sustainable value chain finance?
  • How do we pilot test injecting sustainability into new instruments in our value chains?

Growth Finance in Sub-Saharan Africa - Shell Fn

Posted By Saurabh Lall, ANDE, Thursday, December 15, 2011
August 2011

Growth finance, which provides capital to small and medium sized enterprises, is emerging as an important solution to the problem of the funding gap between private equity and microfinance, often referred to as the ‘missing middle’. Addressing this capital shortage, which is prevalent across the developing world and most pronounced in sub-Saharan Africa, will lead to more robust small and medium sized sectors with increased job creation and economic development. The critical issue for the success of growth finance lies in determining how to create the conditions for it to scale and prove its potential for widespread sustainability. Confronting the nascent nature of the growth finance market and the bias towards private equity norms is vital to creating these conditions. This Report offers 15 practical recommendations to stakeholders, drawn from a strategic market review of five specialist growth finance fund managers and associated investors and entrepreneurs

Global Entrepreneurship Monitor - 2010 Women's Report - Kelley, Brush, Greene & Litovsky

Posted By Saurabh Lall, ANDE, Thursday, December 15, 2011
The purpose of the GEM Women’s report is to examine women entrepreneurs around the world. The report seeks to understand differences in the frequency and nature of women’s entrepreneurship, and makes comparisons with men across various societies. Through interviews with more than 90,000 women, GEM discovered over 14,000 women entrepreneurs, studying their motivations for
starting ventures, as well as their ambitions for growth, innovation and expansion into international markets.

The researchers also analyzed societal attitudes about entrepreneurship, paying particular attention to differences in perceptions  among men and women. Furthermore, they explored the impact of the recession on views about starting and growing businesses among women and men entrepreneurs.
