The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) invites you to join the third regional Learning Lab on Sustainable Agriculture to discuss challenges and best practices in Agriculture Small and Growing Business (SGB) in East and Southeast Asia. This initiative aims to bring together stakeholders - ANDE members and key players in the agriculture ecosystem - identify the barriers, potentials, models and opportunities to promote sustainable agribusiness value chains for women and youth in South East Asia. Concrete models/examples and recent developments in Southeast Asia and perspectives from developers, business and investors will be shared and discussed.

Rikolto (formerly VECO/Vredeseilanden) is an international NGO with more than 40 years' experience in partnering farmer organisations and food chain stakeholders across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Rikolto runs programmes in 14 countries worldwide through eight regional offices. Rikolto has been operating in Vietnam since 1994. Rikolto enables and supports smallholder farmers to take up their role in rural poverty alleviation and to contribute to feeding a growing world population in a sustainable way. In 2017, Rikolto in Vietnam started a 5-year programme named "Supporting Inclusive and Sustainable Agricultural Value Chain Development Benefitting Smallholder Farmers in Vietnam".

This session will be co-led by Rikolto on "Empowering Women and Youth in Sustainable Agribusiness".

About Speakers

Minh Thai | Regional Director | Rikolto

Minh Thai is a regional director of Rikolto. She has 20 years of working experience in research and education, and development aid facilitating change of individuals and organizations in East Africa and South East Asia. This includes more than 10 year working experiences in University of Copenhagen, and University of Hohenheim.Her research and teaching focus on innovation and entrepreneurship, innovation system, research commercialization, value chain, and development and inequality.

Nguyen Tran Lam | Research Advisor | Rikolto

Nguyen Tran Lam began his work at Rikolto as Research Advisor in August 2018. Before joining Rikolto, he had more than 20 years of experience working as researcher, principal investigator, project manager, development specialist, and programme director in various development projects in Vietnam, Asia and Europe. His PhD research project was sponsored by the University of Amsterdam, dealing with social and economic change and its impact. His expertise covers economics, agriculture, health, education, private sector, governance, human rights, civil society, gender, etc. His publications appeared on WorldScientific, Taylor & Francis, White Lotus, Journal of Asian and African Studies, and other peer review journals in Asia and Vietnam.


Khuat Thu Hong | Director | Institute for Social Development Studies (ISDS)

Khuat Thu Hong is the founder and Director of the Institute for Social Development Studies (ISDS), an independent research organization located in Hanoi, Vietnam. She has a B.A. in psychology and a Ph.D. in sociology. Before establishing ISDS, she worked for the Institute of Sociology, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences for sixteen years and for UNDP as the gender specialist from March 2000 to May 2001.  Her major fields of studies include gender, sexuality and social inclusion




Pham Kieu Oanh | CEO | Center for Social Initiatives Promotion (CSIP)

Pham Kieu Oanh is the founder and CEO of the Centre for Social Initiatives Promotion (CSIP). She is a pioneer and an expert in social entrepreneurship development, child protection, and women’s rights. With CSIP, Oanh has built a new sector of social entrepreneurship in Vietnam and the region. In last 20 years, she undertook various positions in the Government agencies, international non-governmental organizations and UN agencies. Oanh obtained her BA in Philosophy from Hanoi University and MA in Sociology & Anthropology from Monash University, Australia.



Trang Tran | CEO and Founder | Fargreen

Trang Tran is CEO and Founder of Fargreen, a social enterprise based in her home country Vietnam which stops the harmful farming practice of open burning of rice straws after harvest and supporting farmers to stay with their land and move out of poverty sustainably. Trang has spent ten years working for both non-profit and for-profit development projects in Asia and Central America.  Fargreen is one of the six must-know development startups in 2015 recommended by DevexImpact and in top Rodale 100 best companies for the Earth 2016. Trang has got her MBA from the Global Social and Sustainable Enterprise program at Colorado State University (CSU). She is a 2015 TED fellow and 2014 Echoing Green fellow. Foreign Policy named Trang as one of the top 100 global thinkers of 2015.


Lisa Huyen | General Director | VINA SAMEX JSC

Lisa Huyen has been a general director of VINA SAMEX, a enterprise in Vietnam in the field of processing and exporting of Start Aniseed and Cinnamon since 2012. She also a member of Viet Nam Cinnamon and Staranise Associations, and Long Son Star anise Associations. Lisa obtained her BA in English from University of Languages and International Studies.
