Strengthening Farmer Groups’ Business Units during the Time of Covid-19

Thursday, September 3rd, 2020
10:00 AM - 11:30 AM GMT+7 Bangkok/Jakarta

(Wednesday, September 2nd, 2020
11:00 PM - 12:30 AM EST)

The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) invites you to join the eighth regional Learning Lab on Sustainable Agriculture to discuss challenges and best practices in Agriculture Small and Growing Business (SGB) in East and Southeast Asia. This lab series aims to bring together stakeholders - ANDE members and key players in the agriculture ecosystem - to discuss key global and regional challenges ranging from agri-business model, sustainable finance innovation, role of women as sustainable consumer and investor, agtech and roles of technology in tackling climate change, energy access, and food security in the region.

Most activities to support farmers in the field have become limited during the Covid-19 pandemic. Since the large-scale social restriction (PSBB) regulations were applied in Indonesia, they have affected the people and the mobilization of agriculture inputs and agriculture outputs. At the same time, farmers need to start the new planting seasons following the crop calendar or the water distribution schedule; if not, they will not have harvests to feed their families and money to send their children to school and for their livelihood. With the Covid-19 development, how can advisory services, financial services and capacity building to farmers groups and farmer groups’ members still be delivered? How can digital tools help, and what are the roles of young farmers to solve the challenges caused by Covid-19? This session will look at organizations providing support for farmer groups’ business units, farmer groups’ members, and ultimately how they have been working with the challenges around Covid-19 and their delivery of services to smallholder farmers. The discussion will range from the challenges faced to the changes in operations needed to adjust and the solutions proposed for how this could change the future of support.

Key Takeaways:

  • Discuss new systems and approaches to service delivery

  • Discuss supply chain challenges and solutions

  • Discuss potential near tear business solutions for farmers

  • Form collaborations among farmer groups to holistically support farmer support organizations and farmers
