 ANDE Africa Conference

Date: Friday, 14th February 2014

Venue: Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi

The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) is a global network of organizations that propel entrepreneurship in emerging markets.  ANDE members provide critical financial, educational, and business support services to small and growing businesses (SGBs) based on the conviction that SGBs will create jobs, stimulate long-term economic growth, and produce environmental and social benefits.  Ultimately, we believe that SGBs can help lift countries out of poverty.

The East Africa Chapter is working toward strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the region through programming that will create platforms for knowledge sharing and facilitate collaboration between sector actors. The chapter will host a one day conference in Nairobi on February 14th 2014 after the Sankalp Africa Forum. This event will bring together ANDE members in East Africa, internationally based members and other organizations that are working with small and growing businesses in Africa.

The theme of the conference is: "Building an ecosystem that enables SGB growth.”

The topics that will be covered at the conference are:

1.      How can the public and private sectors collaborate to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem to enable small business growth-drawing learnings from India.

2.      How can we use talent to accelerate SGBs

This panel discussion will discuss the role of talent in the sector. We want to answer the following questions:

·         How do we get the right talent into the sector?

·         How do we retain the right talent in the sector?

·         Best practices around recruiting, managing and deploying talent in the sector.

3.      Acceleration

We will give an update on ANDE’s accelerator research. We will also discuss USAID’s PACE learning agenda which hopes to build an evidence-based future for SGB acceleration.

4.      Addressing underinvestment in women led businesses.

ANDE member, Value For Women, working in collaboration with the ANDE Women’s Working Group, conducted research to investigate the causes of underinvestment in women led businesses. The report included in depth focus studies in Kenya, India and Mexico and this discussion will delve deeper into the regional findings and the recommendations and next steps from the report.
