Job Title: Consultant (STC), Disruptive Technologies and Funds
Application deadline: January 13, 2022
Location: Remote
Duration: 100 days

A. Project Background and Objectives
IFC: IFC, a member of the World Bank Group — is the largest global development institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets. We work in more than 100 countries, using our capital, expertise, and influence to create markets and opportunities in developing countries. In fiscal year 2020, we invested $22 billion in private companies and financial institutions in developing countries, leveraging the power of the private sector to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity. Gender is an important strategic theme for IFC.
Funds: IFC’s Funds and Disruptive Technologies team invests as a Limited Partner in private equity, venture capital, and debt funds and as a direct investor in technology-enabled businesses in emerging and frontier markets.

IFC’s Gender and Economic Inclusion (GEIG): The IFC Gender and Economic Inclusion Group addresses the private sector’s human capital challenges with a dedicated team that provides support across the corporation to increase deal flow and maximize development impact when it comes to gender, base of the pyramid and other underserved groups such as people with disabilities and people who identify as LGBTQI.

Project Context: Gender-smart investing is a growing asset class with a compelling business case. Billions of dollars are held in assets under management, in both private and public capital markets, and the opportunities to mobilize capital and invest to close gender gaps are promising and growing. While the opportunity is promising, more clarity and guidance is needed by fund managers to understand how to put gender-smart investing into practice. IFC has provided extensive thought leadership and research on gender diversity, especially in emerging markets’ private equity and venture capital firms. In 2019, IFC along with Oliver Wyman and investment firm RockCreek launched the report ‘Moving toward gender balance in private equity and venture capital’, which explores the link between financial returns and gender diversity; the lack of women in the industry; and steps needed to achieve gender balance. In November 2020 IFC published with CDC, ‘Private Equity and Value Creation: A Fund Manager’s Guide to Gender-smart Investing’, providing fund managers with a roadmap on how to strengthen gender diversity at the firm level, and incorporate a gender lens into investment decision-making at the portfolio level.

IFC is setting up a peer-learning platform called Invest2Equal (I2E) to increase the gender impact in IFC’s invested private equity & venture capital funds. I2E will bring together a cohort of fund managers to make timebound actionable commitments to increase gender diversity within their firm and/or investment processes over 18 months.
