2019 ANDE Annual Conference

 To celebrate ANDE’s tenth anniversary, we were pleased to welcome nearly 300 people representing 178 member organizations and 35 countries at the Annual Conference to discuss pressing issues of the small and growing business sector.

2019 Conference Agenda 

Strategy Announcement: Executive Director Randall Kempner announced an updated strategy that will turn ANDE's focus to gender, the environment, and job creation. ANDE's commitment to leveraging its network to support small and growing businesses (SGBs) in emerging markets is unwavering, but choosing to emphasize these three urgent issues will allow the organization to align with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and also to become an even louder voice in the sector, as it makes the case for the prosperity-creating power of SGBs.

Special Announcement: ANDE Launches Gender Equality Initiative and Advancing Women’s Empowerment Fund in partnership with USAID and Visa Foundation.  Read the press release here.


Keynote Speaker: Pulling from her experience as the 64th Secretary of State of the United States, professor, author, and businesswoman, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright commented on the intersection of the public and private sectors and how the development of small and growing businesses can impact foreign and domestic policy.  

PlenaryDevin Chesney from ANDE, Matt Austin from USAID, Kathryn Kaufman from the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, and Urmi Sengupta from the MacArthur Foundation discussed how donors have made strategic adjustments given the changing dynamics in the world, how topics such as gender equality are incorporated, and what implications these shifts can have on ANDE members. 

Plenary:Jenny Everett from ANDE, Laura Ortiz Montemayor from SVX Mexico, Shawn Theunissen from Property Point, and Lisa Willems from AlphaMundi discussed how they are supporting SGBs through environmental action with financial support, technical assistance, and inclusion in the private sector supply chains.

Micro-talks: ANDE members shared new ideas and challenges related to the SGB sector through ten-minute micro-talks.  We were honored to have Jeffrey Prickett from Stanford SEED, Sarah Dunn Phillips from Innovations in Healthcare/Duke Global Health Innovation Center, Molly Rubenstein from MIT, and Reth Kim from the International Finance Corporation serve as speakers.

AATC Winner: The Amani Institute was named the inaugural winner of the Argidius-ANDE Talent Challenge, which identifies highly promising solutions to human capital constraints in key emerging markets worldwide and provides seed funding to scale these models. The challenge will allow Amani to continue developing the Amani Leadership and Management for Impact (ALMI) program.

 ANDE Member of the Year – Organization AwardANDE honored Villgro as Member of the Year for their continued support of the SGB sector. Congratulations, Villgro!

ANDE Member of the Year – Individual Award: Laura Ortiz Montemayor from SVX Mexico was named the ANDE Member of the Year for the important work she is doing in the impact investment space.  Kudos, Laura! 

Closing Plenary: Aspen Institute President and CEO Dan Porterfield joined Randall Kempner to discuss the importance of social entrepreneurship and our natural tendency towards curiosity and creation.
