GSG Millennial Honors
 Congratulations to the
GSG Millennial Honors 2018 Awardees!

 

ANDE, in partnership with the Global Steering Group for Impact Investment (GSG), an independent multilateral catalyzing impact investment and entrepreneurship, has selected two impact entrepreneurs under 30 years of age to honor at the second annual GSG Millennial Honors award ceremony. 

Judges reviewed more than 100 applications, looking for inspiring young entrepreneurial founders from around the world whose businesses provide social impact while producing positive revenue. The following winners were selected based on the criteria described below, and were flown to New Delhi to participate and be honored at the 2018 GSG Global Impact Summit.

The Awardees 

Samir Ibrahim, CEO & Co-Founder, SunCulture

Samir is the CEO and a Co-Founder of SunCulture, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. Prior to SunCulture, Samir studied finance and international business at NYU’s Undergraduate Stern School of Business and joined PwC's Financial Services, Structured Products, and Real Estate Group. Samir is also recognized as a Forbes 30 Under 30, Top Conscious Business Leader by Conscious Company Media, and  a World Energy Council Future Energy Leader alumni.

About SunCulture: SunCulture makes smallholder farming households more productive in an affordable and environmentally friendly way by selling them affordable solar-powered water pumps and customized irrigation systems, bundled with ongoing support and financing. SunCulture was the first company to commercialize solar-powered irrigation in Africa and is the only in Africa that provides a turnkey solar irrigation solution to farmers. SunCulture won the FT/IFC Transformational Business Award in both Excellence in Transformational Business and in the Food, Water, and Land Category in 2018. Ankit Agarwal, Founder & CEO, HelpUsGreen

Ankit Agarwal is the Founder-CEO of Helpusgreen®, a social enterprise that has pioneered the flowercycling® technology to preserves the river Ganges from becoming a religious sewer. Awarded as Fast company world changing ideas 2018 and recognised by Forbes, Fortune and Stanford Social Review Helpusgreen® is the world’s first lean and profitable solution to the monumental temple problem that brings hope to revive the lifeline of more than 420 million – The Ganges. Ankit was named a Queens young leader in 2017. He is an Echoing Green, Young water, Gifted citizen, Acumen, Bill & Melinda Gates Goalkeepers and Royal Commonwealth Society fellow. Ankit has worked on sustainability projects across 26 countries and is amongst the 21 young leaders selected for extraordinary skills by the Asia Society. Recently, Ankit was named in the Forbes India 30 Under 30 list and received the prestigious United Nations Young leader for Sustainable development Goals award 2018, The Unilever Young Entrepreneur Awards 2017 and GSG Millennial Honour 2018.

About Helpusgreen: Helpusgreen® collects floral waste from the temples and mosques in Uttar Pradesh, thus preventing 7600 kilograms of waste flowers and 97 kilograms of toxic chemicals from getting into the river daily. The waste is handcrafted by rural women self-help groups into patented organic fertilizer and incense sticks via flowercycling®. Helpusgreen® facilities will be setup at Varanasi, Warangal, Pune and New Town Kolkata by 2019, providing livelihoods to 11000 rural women and flowercycling® 32 Tonnes waste daily. 

The 2018 Award Requirements

The 2018 round of applications for the GSG Millennial Honors sought nominations fulfilling the following criteria:

  • The honorees must be no more than 30 years of age on 8 October 2018. In case of co-founders, one of the co-founders must meet this age criteria
  • The honorees must have founded and incorporated a social or environmental impact venture, either as a for-profit (i.e., profit with purpose) company, non-profits, co-operative or as other legal forms no later than 8 October 2016
  •  Impact ventures qualified to apply must be at least two years old, have experienced significant revenue and/or earned fees, and must demonstrate measurable impact, scalability and sustainability.
